Caring for turf
We always want our turf to look their best all the time. There are a variety of ways that we can achieve this, one of which is by ensuring that our turf is cut according to their ideal length. Now, some would say that when it comes to ideal turf length, the shorter it is, the better. However, such is not always the case. In fact, the ideal turf length will depend on a variety of factors, and perhaps the major factor would be the kind of turf that you have.
For instance, if you have a turf of fescues, the ideal length for this particular type of turf would be somewhere between two to three inches. This is true whether you use fine leaf fescues or tall fescues. Perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass will also do well with the same height. What all this four mentioned kinds of turf have in common is that they are all categorized are cool season turf, or those that grows well in cool seasons, notably during spring and fall.
On the other hand, turfs like St. Augustine, Kikuyu, and centipede are best kept at lengths which are somewhere between one to three inches, while other turf types like buffalloes and bahias can be allowed to grow up to four inches at least. Bermudas and zoysias, on the other hand, can be trimmed to less than half an inch, but can be allowed to grow to a maximum of two and a half inches to three inches respectively. All these grasses, by the way, are all considered are warm season turf, or those which grow and thrive best during the warmer seasons or months of the year.
Now these are just the recommended lengths for the most common types of turf found throughout the country. If your turf is not included in the types mentioned above, or you have a very specific type of turf, then finding the ideal length for your turf will require some research. To make it easier for you, you may want to just talk to a professional landscaping company who can help you identify the kind of turf that you have, and what the ideal turf length for it will be.
